The Images tab of Scoped SEO flags oversized images, missing alt text and non-WebP formats on any page, and links straight here to fix them.

What WebP is, and why it helps your SEO

WebP is an image format created by Google that stores both lossy photos and lossless graphics, with transparency, in files that are usually much smaller than the PNG or JPG they replace. In Google's own published comparisons, lossless WebP files are about 26 percent smaller than PNG, and lossy WebP files are 25 to 34 percent smaller than JPEG at similar visual quality.

Smaller images load sooner, and the largest image on a page is very often the element that sets its Largest Contentful Paint, one of the three Core Web Vitals. Faster loading is not a ranking guarantee, but it is something you control and it helps real visitors. It is also what audits such as Lighthouse and the Scoped SEO Images tab ask for when they flag images that are not in a modern format.

Which converter should you use?

This page converts anything your browser can open into WebP. If you know your source format, a specific page gives you tuned settings and advice:

  • PNG to WebP for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with transparency.
  • JPG to WebP for photos, where the savings are most visible.
  • WebP to PNG and WebP to JPG when you need to go the other way for an editor, a form or an email.
  • AVIF Converter when you want even smaller files and can serve a fallback.

Quality settings that work

Image typeModeQuality
Photos and hero imagesLossy75 to 85
Thumbnails and cardsLossy70 to 75
Logos, icons, screenshots with textLosslessn/a
Illustrations with flat colorsLossless or lossy85 to 90 if lossy
Product photos with fine detailLossy85 to 90

Start at 80 and compare. Raise the quality only if you can see a difference, because every step up makes the file noticeably larger.

Serve WebP on your site safely

Every current browser displays WebP, so you can usually use it directly. If you want a fallback for very old software, wrap the image in a picture element:

<picture>
  <source srcset="/img/hero.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="/img/hero.jpg" alt="Describe the image" width="1200" height="630" loading="lazy">
</picture>

Always keep the original files. Convert from the original each time you change settings instead of converting a WebP again.

Common questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser using a WebP encoder that ships with this page. Your files never leave your device.

How much smaller is WebP?

Photos are usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar quality, and PNG graphics often shrink by more. The tool shows the exact saving for each file.

Does WebP work in every browser?

Yes. WebP is supported by all current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari, so it is safe to use for the web.

Is WebP good for SEO?

WebP does not rank by itself. It makes images smaller, which helps pages load faster, and speed supports the page experience Google looks at. Descriptive file names, alt text and sensible dimensions matter as much.

Should I replace every image with WebP?

Convert the large images first: hero images, banners and big photos. Tiny icons save very little. The Scoped SEO Images tab shows which files on a page are the heaviest.
