Sizes depend on the image. The tool shows the AVIF size next to a WebP version of the same image, so you can see the difference for your own files.

Serve AVIF with a fallback

List AVIF first, then WebP, then JPG, and the browser picks the first format it understands:

  <source srcset="/img/hero.avif" type="image/avif">
  <source srcset="/img/hero.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="/img/hero.jpg" alt="Describe the image" width="1200" height="630">
</picture>

Tips for encoding

  • Use quality 50 to 65 as a starting point. AVIF holds up at lower numbers than JPG.
  • Slower speed gives smaller files and takes longer. Large images may need several seconds each.
  • Use WebP as your default and add AVIF for the heaviest images.

Common questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

AVIF is often 20 percent or more smaller than WebP for photos, but it encodes more slowly and has slightly less tooling. Use WebP as the safe default and AVIF where size matters most.

Which browsers support AVIF?

Current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all display AVIF. Serve it with a WebP or JPG fallback using the picture element if you need older browsers.

Why is AVIF encoding slow?

The format does heavy analysis to get small files. Large images can take several seconds each in the browser.

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel, like WebP.
